Managing Project Deadlines and Resources

Managing project deadlines and resources poses a practical challenge for Human Factors Engineers. This is mainly due to the iterative nature of our work and the integrative role we play in project teams.

In practice, HFE is inherently iterative. It often involves multiple cycles of design, testing, analysis, and refinement to ensure that the end product meets the required usability and safety standards. Each iteration can uncover new insights or issues that may require revisiting previous stages of the design, leading to potential expansions in scope or revisions in the project timeline.

In addition, the HFE elements of a project often depend on outputs from other project areas. Delays in these areas can impact the human factors work, compressing the time available for essential HFE activities and potentially leading to compromises in the quality of the human-centred design aspects.

These challenges underscore why managing project deadlines and resources is particularly complex for Human Factors Engineers.
